DIY Dress Up Corner

July 15, 2015

I found this post in my drafts recently – can’t believe I never published it! Ellie loves her dress up corner and has since added several necklaces and hats to her collection. She may love bugs and mud and cars, but she’s all girl when it comes to clothes and shoes and dolls!

—————————————–

IMG_7142IMG_7116

Ellie is just starting to get into the dressing up stage. We don’t have too many girl dress ups…yet, but she certainly loves to try on all her shoes, wear her backpack and camera, and adores trying on necklaces. These things were piling up on her dresser, so I decided to make her a little dress up corner in her room.

IMG_2671IMG_2667

On one of our frequent trips to Ikea, I found this darling, white cabinet in the clearance section. It had a slight chip on the corner, so they were selling it for $5. $5 to save me a trip to Lowes, cutting the board, and an afternoon of painting? I’ll take it! I found some clear, glass knobs at Hobby Lobby for 50% off (note! the knobs and hooks go on sale every other week!)

IMG_2682
IMG_2687IMG_2693

Brian fixed my marks on the board (I was just going to wing it, he was going for perfection 😉 and drilled four holes into the board. Then we screwed each of the four knobs into the board.

IMG_2704IMG_2714

The screws on the knobs were a little too long, or my board was too thin. Either way, we had to fix the problem! Brian had a lovely little hand saw and it took awhile, but we trimmed down the screws! After, Brian added a thin piece of board to the back (since the screws still stuck out a little with the washers) and added hooks to hang them.

IMG_7105

Voila! Project done. Now Ellie has the perfect place to hang her treasures and try on all her pairs of shoes. After taking these pictures, I added a full length mirror to the corner (you know, those really cheap ones from Target!) I frequently find her playing in her tiny corner, taking pictures of herself in the mirror, wearing mismatched shoes. 😉

How to Make Fabric Bows

April 29, 2015

How to make fabric bows

We have a ridiculous obsession with bows around this house. Ellie loves picking out a matching (and sometimes not so matching) bow in the morning while I do her hair.  With another little lady on the way (and nesting starting to kick in!) it was necessary that we invest in a few more bows. Ok, ok, maybe not absolutely necessary, but that reasoning wasn’t going to stop a crazy pregnant lady. 🙂 I searched high and low on Etsy for some matching bows for the girls, but I found that my typical go-to shops were on vacation or I would have to pay an arm and a leg per bow! Deciding I wasn’t in the mood to spend too much money, I pulled out my scrap fabric bin from the garage and decided to make some fabric bows myself.

How to Make Super Easy Fabric Bows (10)

With Ellie by my side as my sewing helper, string cutter, and bow holder, we got right to work! These bows are super simple and easy to make, plus they’re adorable on headbands or clips. To make fabric bows, you will need:

-Scrap fabric cut into 2 rectangles (my bow pieces were roughly 6-7 inches long, 5 inches wide. And just a tiny, folded rectangle for the middle piece)
-Sewing machine *optional
-Iron
-Hot Glue Gun
-Alligator clips or elastic

Fabric Bow Steps How to Make Super Easy Fabric Bows (13)

Directions:

1: Cut scrap material into rectangle. The larger the rectangle, the larger the bow!
2. Fold fabric in half length wise, making sure the “wrong side” is facing out. Sew along the long side with your sewing machine.
3. Flip your newly sewn fabric inside out. Iron the fabric flat so the seam is in the middle.
**If you do not want to use a sewing machine for the previous steps, you can hot glue the fabric together. I found that I liked the clean look from the sewing machine, but gluing the fabric edges together works too!
4. With the seam facing you, bring in the two ends of the long edge of the fabric so they meet in the middle.
5. Gather the bow together in the middle to make a bow shape and add a touch of hot glue to hold in place.
6. Using a tiny strip of scrap material cut into a rectangle, fold tightly over the middle of the bow and glue in place. Cut off any long ends.
7. Attach to elastic or alligator clip. Voila!

How to Make Super Easy Fabric Bows (14)
After trying several types of material, I learned that I prefer a thicker cotton (or home decor fabrics!) The thicker fabrics seemed to provide a better shape overall.

Our bow collection is complete! For now… 😉 It was so easy to make these bows, I’m sure we’ll be back making more soon! (I’m dying to make a few jersey headbands too, perhaps that will be our next craft adventure…)

big hero 6 movie night - he & i blog
It’s out, it’s out! After seeing Big Hero 6 in theaters last November (Ellie’s first movie theater experience!) we’ve been counting down the days until it was available for purchase! Since first watching the movie, Ellie has started giving us fist bumps then saying “badalalalala.” Ad-or-able. We had to snatch up a copy for ourselves from Walmart the day it came out. How could we not?! 🙂
To celebrate our new purchase, we had a little family movie night, in which Ellie was enthralled the entire time. We had a lot of fun putting together a few fun treats and crafts before the movie, with Ellie’s plush Baymax by her side the whole time. “He’s my favorite!” We ordered him from Walmart.com and he was the perfect addition to our movie night party. If you’re ready for a super easy Baymax mask and cookie tutorial, scroll down!

Directions: Line a pan or plate with wax paper. Divide white baking chocolate into two bowls. In the microwave, warm each bowl of chocolate for 20-30 second increments, stirring in between. Once melted, stir red food coloring into one bowl. Spoon a generous amount of both red and white melted chocolate onto the tops of the cookies. Set on wax paper and let set in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

Melt a small amount of semi-sweet baking chocolate in microwave. Using a round tipped utensil (I used a chop stick! 🙂 carefully adorn the cookie with eyes and a line across to create Baymax’s face. Using the same method and baking chocolate, you can make Baymax’s mask face or a low battery signal. (May takes a few practice tries!) Let chocolate decorations set before serving.

Use an exacto knife to carefully cut out eye holes through each layer (you could try to cut the holes out before, but they may not line up as well). Cut elastic down to size and attach with hot glue. Run around the house like Ellie yelling “I super hero! I save the day!”

Best movie night we’ve had this year! Have you purchased Big Hero 6 yet? I learned that when you purchase the Big Hero 6 Blu-Ray/DVD + Gift With Purchase Set includes a digital movie on Vudu while, supplies last. All I have to do is scan my receipt using the Savings Catcher in the Walmart app, then watch for a message on my phone or email. Now we can watch Big Hero 6 on any device! I know what our next road trip movie will be. 🙂

DIY: Display Your Instagrams!

January 23, 2015

Considering I have thousands of instagram photos and haven’t figured out what to do with them, I’m thrilled to be sharing this post today! My talented friend Sue is here on the blog sharing the cutest DIY today! I’m going to have to work on this ASAP!
————————————

Hi friends! My name’s Sue, and I love that I get to be here with you today! Alexa is simply inspirational, isn’t she?

Let me introduce myself and my blog to you a little. I’m a mom of two little girls, wife of a car and soccer enthusiast, author of the blog Sue’s News (formerly Chevron & Lace), and owner of the Etsy shop Susan Stange Design (also formerly Chevron & Lace). I mostly sell items for babies, little girls, and their mamas (Plans to branch out to little boys in the works!)

My blog is, in general, about self improvement. I share things about my family, my hobbies, my talents, and anything else I find interesting and helpful. My favorite part about blogging is when I’m able to share something that inspires someone else or helps them accomplish something they haven’t before.

Today I want to share a quick, cute, DIY for your home. I’ve lived in my home for 1.5 years and most of my walls are still bare! I’ve got this kind of fear of putting holes in my wall. Anyone else relate?

The one thing I do have hung up on my wall are my instagram frames.

title01

You guys, this is so easy and it probably ended up costing me about $10.00 or less. All you need are some frames, possibly spray paint, string, tape, and your favorite photos.
IMG_6704
IMG_6698
IMG_6712
IMG_6722
The pictures really say it all, but for the detail-oriented in all of us, here are the steps:

Step one, find a frame or two (or four). You can find plenty of frames at thrift stores! Remove the glass and backing. If it isn’t the color you want, purchase some spray paint and quickly give it a couple of coats. I love the Rustoleum paint and primer brand. It adheres to plastics, wood, and I think metal, too!
Step 2, print off your photos. I went to Walmart and ordered 4×4” squares. You can do it all online and it can be ready within an hour.
Step 3, lay out your photos in the order you want, then flip them over, face-down. Space them out evenly.
Step 4, cut long pieces of string and lay them out on top of the photos. Use strips of tape to secure the photos to the string, or if you have any of those mini clothes pins, I’m sure they would be adorable, too!
Step 5, tie the string at either end to the top of the frame and to the bottom in an attractive little bow.

And that’s it! Even if it weren’t one of the only things hanging in my house, it would still be a guest favorite, and my favorite, too.

Thanks for letting me have a little space on your blog today, Alexa, and thanks for reading friends! I’d love to see you over on my blog! I’ve got a great sewing tutorial up for an over-sized long sleeve color bloc tee currently, so while you’re in the pinning mood…

DIY Thankful Wreath (and a free printable!)

November 5, 2014

Thanksgiving Thankful Wreath, Thankful Tree
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I really wanted to make a Thankful tree! Every year my family makes a tree or poster for us to write what we are thankful for during the season. Turns out, I’m not too great at making trees. 🙂 So I opted for a paper leaf wreath instead! I love the color it brings into this little corner of my home and love that we have a place to add everything we are thankful for. Tutorial and free printable below!
Thanksgiving Thankful Wreath, Thankful Tree, Thanksgiving Printables

Supplies:
Printable Leaves (download here!)
Cardboard
Scissors
Hot Glue Gun
Step One: Print out leaves and cut to size (this is the time consuming part!) You will also want to cut a piece of cardboard into a wreath shape. I enlisted Brian’s help for this part, while Ellie helped me “cut” the leaves. In reality, she scattered all the leaves around the dining room. 🙂
Thanksgiving Thankful Wreath, Thankful Tree, Leaf Printable

Step Two: Time to start writing! Write everything you are thankful for on the leaves. We started out writing on the beige leaves, simply so it would show up better. I left out a bunch of the lighter color leaves so that we can continue to write on and stick them in throughout the month.
Step Three: Fold each leaf in half at the bottom and add a dab of hot glue. This will give your wreath shape and volume (instead of looking flat!)
Thanksgiving Printable, Thankful Wreath Thankful Tree

Step Four: Using your hot glue gun, glue on all your leaves to the cardboard wreath. Carefully layer each leaf so that it covers up the glue spot. You will want your wreath to look as full as possible (no cardboard showing!) so add more leaves to your wreath if needed when you’re finished.
Step Five: You’re finished!! Hang indoors (so they paper doesn’t get ruined outside). I used a 3M Hook to hang my wreath on our door in the dining room. Show it off to your family and friends…then take a picture and send it to me! 🙂

Some of the things we are thankful for: Our home, family and friends, electronics (guess who wrote that one 😉 chocolate, The Book of Mormon, Brian & Ellie, and the power of prayer. What are you grateful for?

DIY Madeline Halloween Costume

I mentioned yesterday that Ellie is quite obsessed with this Madeline book. Dream come true for this mama! I used to watch Madeline every day after kindergarten, and still remember most of the episodes.

I had originally planned on having Ellie dress up as Anna from Frozen, but her costume got lost in the mail, so we improvised. DIY Madeline costume? Done and done! I love this costume so much, plus, it was super easy to make. For a quick tutorial (and more photos), keep scrolling down.

How to Make a Madeline Costume - Supplies and Tutorial

DIY Madeline Costume

Blue Knit Fabric (think maxi skirt material! I found mine at Joann’s for 50% off. I purchased a 1.5 yards, but 1 yard would have been plenty)
Matching blue thread
White Felt
Long Sleeve White Tee
Red Ribbon
Hat (I found this hat at Zurcher’s party store. You’d think we should get a discount there since it’s our name, right?)
White socks or tights
Black Shoes

How to Make a Madeline Costume - Supplies and Tutorial

First, I started out with making a quick jumper. I cut around one of Ellie’s dresses I had on hand, cutting a little bit bigger, so it didn’t get smaller when I sewed it.

How to Make a Madeline Costume Tutorial

Then, on one of the dress pieces, I cut a scoop neck for the front of the dress. You can finish off the edges on the neck, sleeves, and hem, or you can leave them as is, this fabric won’t fray. On her dress, I finished off the edges first. Then I pinned the front and back dress pieces together (inside out!) and sewed down the sides. With white felt, I cut out a Peter Pan collar, then attached it to the front of the dress.(I googled a few tutorials first, I would recommend doing the same!)

How to Make a Madeline Cape

For the cape, I free hand cut a cape like shape. Then I stitched red ribbon to the top, front ends. I also took off the black fabric on the original hat and replaced it with the same red ribbon. To complete the look, add high white socks and black Mary Jane’s.

I finished her costume during naptime, and as soon as she woke up, she insisted on wearing it all day. In fact, ran around the house saying “Show Daddy! I Madeline! I Madeline!” She was thrilled, to say the least.

I added the peter pan collar to the jumper, just in case Ellie wasn’t a huge fan of the cape. I attempted to sew the Peter Pan collar onto the dress, but my dear ol’ sewing machine threw a fit, so I added a few drops of hot glue and called it good. Haha.

I think I’ll call this last minute Halloween costume a success! Ellie refuses to take it off and it took less than 45 minutes to make. Did you watch Madeline growing up? What are dressing up as for Halloween?

Staying Organized | DIY Jewelry Display

October 20, 2014

DIY jewelry display, jewelry organizer

When we moved into our house last year, I shoved all my jewelry in my top dresser drawer and there it has stayed for the last year. In fact, I thought I lost it all until the other day when I found it all tangled up in the back of my drawer. I figured it was about time to do something about it! After spending a lot of time untangling, a lot, I laid it all out on the dresser for a week. A week! I knew that it would start to drive me crazy (and Brian too!) so we’d come up with a solution faster. Ha. After popping into our messy, messy garage one afternoon, I spotted this lone, forgotten shelf. I picked it up at a local thrift store last year and since we’ve moved, I haven’t used it at all.  It was perfect for our room!

DIY jewelry display, jewelry organizer

While I loved the blue, it didn’t fit our room at all. I chose white so all the colorful jewelry would pop! I picked up some glossy, white spray paint and two tiny dowels at Michael’s and Brian grabbed the small white hooks from Lowes. After painting the shelf and dowels and letting it dry, Brian cut down the dowels to size. He bent two hooks and screwed them into the side of the shelf and from there, we placed the dowel on top. (You can kind of see it in the photos below!) It makes it super handy for the bracelets to be able to remove the dowel and slide a bracelet on and off.

DIY jewelry display, jewelry organizerDIY jewelry display, jewelry organizer

The necklaces are hung on just tiny white hooks. No more tangles! And no more broken necklaces! (Ellie, I love you, but you haven’t figured out how to be quite as gentle with mommy’s jewelry as I would like 😉

DIY jewelry display, jewelry organizerDIY jewelry display, jewelry organizerDIY jewelry display, jewelry organizer

And there you have it. A simple, easy jewelry organizer! On a random side note, I used to wear earrings every single day. All day long. Now all of the sudden, I can’t wear anything remotely heavy. If I do, my ears get infected and red! So most of these pairs of earrings are saved for date nights and church, where I don’t wear them for very long. Do you have any favorite lightweight earrings? I’d love to hear your favorites and while we’re at it, any of your favorite places to buy cute (affordable!) jewelry. XO

Five Minute DIY Beanie (from an old sweater!)

October 9, 2014

How to make a beanie from an old sweater, DIY hat

To finish off the last of my week of fall DIY projects, recipes, and crafts (for now at least!) how about a super easy one! You know those sweaters you never wear? Let’s put them to good use! Easy, five minute beanies coming right up!

Last week, we caught a glimpse of that cooler, crisp fall weather. (This week, is of course, nice and warm. Oh, Utah!) While I was pulling out a few of our colder weather items, I realized that Ellie only had one hat, and it is a little big on her. Actually, it fits me! I set out to make her a few new hats, using a few old sweaters. Some were cute but didn’t fit, and others…well they weren’t so cute. I had picked them up at a thrift store for a project, and decided they would work perfect for these hats!

To make a quick (and easy!) beanie from an old sweater, grab an hat to use as a template. I used this pink hat as my template. I cut a little smaller around it for Ellie, and a little bigger (for room to stitch!) for me. Mother daughter matching hats? Yes please!

How to make a beanie from an old sweater, DIY hatHow to make a beanie from an old sweater, DIY hat

Once you’ve cut out your shape, flip inside out and stitch around the edges. Double stitch for extra strength! Sweater material is a little trickier to work with, so go slow and make sure the bottom corner pieces are always lined up. And then….that’s it! Can you believe it? Super easy DIY hats. I added a yarn pom pom to a few of the hats for a little extra pop.

How to make a beanie from an old sweater, DIY hat

The vest was definitely not my style, but the color (and fabric!) were perfect for a fall beanie.

How to make a beanie from an old sweater, DIY hat from sweater, chevron hat

Ahh the chevron. Didn’t fit right, but a chevron hat? Yes, please!

How to make a beanie from an old sweater, DIY hat from sweater, striped hat

And this gray striped sweater was so darling, but again, didn’t fit right, so I had some fun with the scissors. 😉

With everything going on lately, I really love easy projects. Gets my creative juices flowing, but still leaves me time to get all the other million things done on my to-do list. (Anyone else feel like it’s starting to get to the busy time of the year? It’s been crazy lately!) Also, all the hats…Ellie approved!  When the weather cools down again, you bet you can find Ellie and I sporting our matching hats.

P.S. If you happen to be in Utah this weekend, feel free to stop by Tags (aka my favorite thrift store) I’ll be hosting an event from 1-3pm, sharing some DIY ideas and previous thrift store projects, along with a few new ones! Plus we’ll be hanging out near the bakery, so stop by and pick up the most delicious brownie. (seriously, the best)

Happy almost weekend! XO

DIY “Happy Harvest” Wood Sign + Free Template

October 7, 2014

Yesterday, I gave you a look at this hand painted Happy Harvest sign I made for our front porch. I have been loving all these darling wood signs lately and with the holidays approaching, I figured it was as good as time as any to hop on that wagon. Since I had all my supplies at home (my wood was a leftover shelf from our first apartment!) I didn’t spend any extra money. Those are my favorite kinds of projects! I didn’t actually know how I was going to make the stencil work before I started, but I came up with a pretty clever way to transfer the stencil, without purchasing any transfer medium. This project is totally doable with just regular household supplies. I have also included a free stencil for you, too, so you can make your own sign!

Hand Painted Wooden Fall Sign DIY and Tutorial, DIY Halloween Sign and Free Stencil at www.alexamariezurcher.com

Supplies Needed:
Wood Board cut down to 16” x 19”
Sandpaper
Brown and White Acrylic Paint
Paintbrushes
Old Rag
Chalk and Ballpoint Pen (or transfer paper if you have it)
Happy Harvest Stencil – download here

First, cut board down to size and sand. My board measured 16” by 19”. You can make a bigger or smaller board, this is just the size that fits the template. After cutting, sand the edges.

How to stain board with paint, make a wooden halloween sign How to stain board with paint, make a wooden halloween sign

Next, mix paint with a little bit of water. (I couldn’t find any brown paint at our house, so I just mixed every color I had together. It would be much easier next time just using brown paint!) Grab your rag and also keep a little bit of water handy. Paint one or two small strokes on your board, going with the grain. Take your cloth and spread the paint thin. If paint is still too thick, dip your cloth in water and spread again. Continue over the entire board and edges. After I was done painting, I wanted to add a little bit more contrast, so I took some watered down black paint and using my wet rag, added it randomly to the board.

Stain any board using paint

While letting your board dry, print out your stencil. I decided to go with “Happy Harvest” because I could use the sign for both Halloween and Thanksgiving. Since my board was so big, I had to design the stencil to be large as well. I ended up printing it on four pieces of paper, then I taped them together, like a puzzle. You can download the stencil here, it’s already in the four different sizes for you!

Happy Harvest Halloween Sign, DIY and tutorial

Since I don’t have a fancy Cricut machine or didn’t want to spend hours with an exacto knife cutting out each letter, I got a little creative. On the backside of your stencil, take a piece of chalk and rub. Make sure it is covered well. (If you painted your wood white or a light color, you can use a pencil for the same effect.)

How to transfer stencil onto wood using chalk

Turn your stencil over and place back on your piece of wood. Now, using a pen, outline the letters. The pen will push the chalk down onto the wood, leaving you with temporary stencil lines.

How to transfer stencil onto wood using chalk

This is what my stencil looked like after. Super easy! You will probably see a bit of excess chalk on your board, that’s ok. It will wipe right off after you’re done!

How to transfer stencil onto wood using chalk

Using a thin paintbrush, carefully fill in your stencil with paint. I used craft acrylic paint. Carefully line the edges first with paint, then spread the paint towards the middle to fill in. Let dry. After your paint has dried, you can take a damp paper towel to carefully remove the excess chalk.

How to transfer stencil onto wood using chalk, hand painted wood Halloween sign

Ta-da! There you have it. A super simple, easy hand painted fall sign!
