To finish off the last of my week of fall DIY projects, recipes, and crafts (for now at least!) how about a super easy one! You know those sweaters you never wear? Let’s put them to good use! Easy, five minute beanies coming right up!
Last week, we caught a glimpse of that cooler, crisp fall weather. (This week, is of course, nice and warm. Oh, Utah!) While I was pulling out a few of our colder weather items, I realized that Ellie only had one hat, and it is a little big on her. Actually, it fits me! I set out to make her a few new hats, using a few old sweaters. Some were cute but didn’t fit, and others…well they weren’t so cute. I had picked them up at a thrift store for a project, and decided they would work perfect for these hats!
To make a quick (and easy!) beanie from an old sweater, grab an hat to use as a template. I used this pink hat as my template. I cut a little smaller around it for Ellie, and a little bigger (for room to stitch!) for me. Mother daughter matching hats? Yes please!
Once you’ve cut out your shape, flip inside out and stitch around the edges. Double stitch for extra strength! Sweater material is a little trickier to work with, so go slow and make sure the bottom corner pieces are always lined up. And then….that’s it! Can you believe it? Super easy DIY hats. I added a yarn pom pom to a few of the hats for a little extra pop.
The vest was definitely not my style, but the color (and fabric!) were perfect for a fall beanie.
Ahh the chevron. Didn’t fit right, but a chevron hat? Yes, please!
And this gray striped sweater was so darling, but again, didn’t fit right, so I had some fun with the scissors. 😉
With everything going on lately, I really love easy projects. Gets my creative juices flowing, but still leaves me time to get all the other million things done on my to-do list. (Anyone else feel like it’s starting to get to the busy time of the year? It’s been crazy lately!) Also, all the hats…Ellie approved! When the weather cools down again, you bet you can find Ellie and I sporting our matching hats.
P.S. If you happen to be in Utah this weekend, feel free to stop by Tags (aka my favorite thrift store) I’ll be hosting an event from 1-3pm, sharing some DIY ideas and previous thrift store projects, along with a few new ones! Plus we’ll be hanging out near the bakery, so stop by and pick up the most delicious brownie. (seriously, the best)
Happy almost weekend! XO
I have the perfect sweater for this…I'm going to try! Thanks 🙂
What a neat idea!! If only I could sew…
Yes. matching hats for me and my girls! (And my husband???? He probably won't go for it…..) I'm not much of a seamstress, but I'll con someone into helping me for food or something.
So clever!
These are so cute! What a great idea:)
