After I had Ellie, I desperately needed something to help me get things done during the day. I simply couldn’t do the dishes, laundry, or brush my teeth while snuggling with my little munchkin. I needed more hands! And then I found the Moby Wrap. Quick fix to my solution, I still get to snuggle and hold E, but have both of my hands free! I just couldn’t bring myself to fork over the $50+ for a piece of fabric. So after some googling and pinteresting, I made my own, for half the price! It was so quick and easy, I thought I would share it with you!
Supplies needed:
-2.5 yards of stretchy knit fabric, 46” wide (make sure it stretches all four ways) I bought mine at Joann’s and used a 40% off coupon, making my total purchase $20. Not too shabby.
-Sewing scissors
-Ruler
-Sewing Machine
-Thread (it doesn’t matter if it matches, you won’t see it at all 🙂
Step 1: Layout fabric and cut lengthwise (or hot dog style!) right down the middle to make 2 pieces that are 23” wide. Make sure both sides are even.
Step 2: Lay out both your pieces so they make one long piece. And by long, I mean super long. (It will be 5 yards long and 23” wide) Sew together. (I don’t have a serger, so I just sewed straight across, then zig-zag stitched.)
Step 3: Now you will want to trim your ends. It will make your fabric more manageable when tying. I think I started about 20” from the end, and cut up from there. To make both sides even, I folded over the fabric and cut at the same time. My ends are far from perfect, but it works.
And that’s it! Seriously, it’s that easy. Tying it is a little tricky, but look here, here, or here for a few tutorials on how to tie it. Make sure that when you wrap it, the stitching is underneath, so you don’t see it. After a few times, I got the hang of it. Now I use it wherever I go! E loves it!
(Just ignore both of our nap hair 🙂
*Don’t want to sew?? You can also make this wrap using 5 yards of fabric. Lay it out, and cut in half lengthwise. Trim ends and you have two wraps and didn’t have to sew a thing! If you have a serger, you can serge all the sides. This type of fabric won’t fray, so no worries if you don’t!

I am so glad you did something like this! With our little coming in a few months I wanted something like this, but I didn't want to fork over that much money! and Michael just bought me a sewing machine for Christmas!!! So thank you!

I am definitely making (at least) one of these! A tip…if you are ever cutting fabric that you don't want to fray, use a pinking shear (the zig-zag scissor). It saves time and energy that you'd spend hemming edges, and for projects like this, it doesn't matter what the edges look like! Thanks for the tutorial!!

I just made this and it was super easy! Still need to trim down the ends a bit but it looks pretty legit for a 10 minute craft! I would have loved a close-up of the stitch you use to secure the two pieces together. Thanks for a great tutorial!

I just found this, while googling for a diy moby wrap tutorial – and this looks awesome!
I needed to make one for both my BFF, who is due Jan 15, and myself, due Jan. 22 – I'm loving the idea of just getting one super long piece, cutting it, and having two identical ones!
I have seen a tip elsewhere that suggests asking the fabric cutting people at the store to please cut the length of fabric in half for you – lots will do this for you, no problem! I don't know if that would make my coupon for Joann's be void – if it's technically in more than one piece? But, worth a shot!
Anything I don't actually have to do myself is a super bonus! 🙂 Thanks for this awesome tutorial!

Thank you for posting this! Yours is the first tutorial I've read that says to only buy 2.5 yards and cut them and sew them together. All the other tutorials said to buy 5 yards but that doesn't make it much cheaper than just buying one, so thank you! I just have a question about what kind of fabric you used. I don't know what the best option would be for something that is stretchy, but still supportive. And breathable. I don't want to get too hot. Should I stay away from cotton? The ones I was looking at buying are made of bamboo (happy baby) or modal (solly baby). I don't want to make the wrong choice and then wish I purchased one instead.
Thank you!
